David Backhouse

David Backhouse is a portfolio manager in the dedicated High Yield Bond team. He joined Columbia Threadneedle in 2003 as an investment analyst, specialising in non-investment grade credits. Before joining Columbia Threadneedle, David worked for Gartmore as a credit analyst. He has also worked for UBK Asset Management as a senior Telecommunications analyst and Ernst & Young as an auditor. He holds a BEng (Hons) degree in electrical and electronic engineering from UMIST and is a qualified chartered accountant. David is a member the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Barrie Whitman

Barrie Whitman has had more than 15 years' experience in the specialised arena of high-yield debt. He started out in 1987 at United Bank of Kuwait as a credit analyst, moving on to become a fund manager and CIO for high yield investments at the bank. Whitman moved to Standard Bank in 1997 and then to Columbia Threadneedle two years later where he is now head of European high yield. He employs a bottom-up approach to bond selection, and, in common with all Columbia Threadneedle managers, is involved in the house’s renowned teamwork-based style of investment.


The Fund aims to achieve income. The Fund primarily invests in higher risk bonds and similar debt investments issued by companies, banks, public entities and governments located anywhere in the world. The Fund may also invest in other transferable securities, collective investment schemes (including those managed or operated by the ACD), warrants, money market instruments, deposits and derivatives.
